In My Element

This week is sports week at the school here. Will played chess and enjoyed it (lost, tho). We just generally “hung out”. I spent a lot of time with Sabina, one of the three Newari sisters that some of you have heard about. I was able to encourage her about her future. So many young AND old Nepali’s are leaving here.  The prospects are gloomy and life is hard. As a believer no matter where we are, God can make a way. It is so comforting to know that His purposes for us will not be thwarted. Sabina has always wanted to be a doctor or nurse, specifically in her own village. There is no doctor there. I encouraged her to seek God’s will–it is perfect, tailor-made for each of His children. We were able to go into the office & study the Scripture. As we were reading in Psalms, I would explain some of the English words to her. I also talked about David and what set him apart, as God called him”a man after my own heart”. Sabina said “Who is David?”. After I got over the shock, I realized, this is what we’re here for. She has done translation work for missionary’s in her village. She knows Newari, Nepali and English. She is interested in ministry besides medicine, so who knows what God will do. I love encouraging young believers in their pursuit of the Lord’s glorious plan for their life!

The power has been particularly erratic. Today, it didn’t come on until 4:30. I am fighting the clock to get a post done, so that I can do my studying for the girl’s Bible study, already tomorrow evening. Made banana muffins with those itty bitty bananas! We didn’t have a bread pan, so muffins it was.

We hope you are all doing well. Thank you for your prayers!

Quick Hello!

Hello everyone! We are all doing fine….now. I (Liz) was sick on Friday, starting at around 2:oo a.m. The only thing that I can trace it to is getting some water in my mouth while in the shower. I let my guard down this one time since coming here and ………..bammo, hit like a ton of bricks. I was in bed all day Friday. Needless to say, it was a very long day.

We had the girls class Thursday night. We’ve had a hard time scheduling it because the girls are studying very hard for their important final exams. They have three more weeks of study and it is stressful for them. We will be meeting on Thursday nights. There were 10 girls including the 2 GBC students and Pramita to translate, of course! The scripture I used to begin our study is I Timothy 2:22 “Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.” We studied about some specific things to run from. Next week we will study the things to run after. I asked for ideas of what they might want to study in the following weeks. Smiley (Sunita), said she’d like to know what someone her age can do for the church and the kingdom of God. Wow! Romans 12:1-2 is bound to be in that lesson!

We had a great day in church again. Nirmila, the newest convert of whom we have written about, gave us an invitation to her daughters’ wedding, this coming Friday at 2:00. The invitation is totally in Nepali, so we had to call on Pramita to find out the time and place. More details later.

Love

Still Here!

Thanks to all of you respondents to the blog! Your encouragement is a great help! Thank you so much for your prayers for Will, also. He has had a happy heart for the last week. Last Sunday we bought a small, cheap guitar that he can learn on easier than a big one. He is getting lessons from Amit at 4:30 every day. His fingers are getting sore, but it helps to have a teacher besides me (Liz). He’d be whining big time to me! It is Amit’s goal for Will to learn by the time we leave. We will leave the guitar here so that other kids can be taught if they are in interested. Monday night we walked to a new friends house for dinner. Violetta and her daughter Vivianna, transplants from Brazil, have an apartment about 15 minutes from here. We had good food and fellowship. It was great not to have to cook for a change. Violetta, who recently returned from Orissa, India, showed us pictures of the work she oversees there. The school has 250 children. The people live in a garbage dump. Because they are of the lowest caste, the children have no record of birth. According to the government, they do not exist, therefore they cannot go to school. This keeps them from any hope of  a future. Because of Violetta’s school, they receive the documents they must have. Not only that, they are receiving the gospel, the good news! Many of the parents are being converted from that empty religion that were born into. This just illustrates the many needs across the world. If we all listen and obey God’s direction for us, what a difference we can make.

I made brownies on Tuesday from memory and scratch! Yesterday there was a school holiday. Pramita and I made brownies and popcorn for the children’s 3:00 tiffin (snack). They are always so hungry at that time! You guessed it! They had never had a brownie before.
